Coprinus comatus |
The Shaggy Mane gets its name from its scaly cap surface. This large ink cap mushroom grows in lawns, in parks, along road sides and trails, i.e., disturbed ground.. Often fruits in large groups or fairy rings. |
Gills are free; color changes from white to pink to ink black. Eventually the gills deliquesce, or melt into a black, gooey mess. Spore print black (good luck). Hollow stipe. Said to be a good edible, but be sure you don't have Coprinopsis atramentaria, which can cause poisoning when consumed with alcohol. |
