Auricularia angiospermarum |
Grows from hardwood; a visually identical version, Auricularia americana, grows from conifer wood. To show the need for scientific names, some of the many common names of this fungus are wood ear, tree ear, jelly ear, Judas' ear and cloud ear. Edible and used frequently in Asian cuisine, especially with soups; adds a textural and nutritional component, as it lacks flavor. Formerly known as Auricularia auricula-judae, a European species whose name we borrowed for a hundred years. |
