Lycoperdon echinatum |
These examples are 2.5-3cm across. At this stage of development (immature; not producing spores) the spines are firm but soft to the touch and do not fall off when handled. Color is well depicted in the images. Shades State Park. August. |
A very young and an older, mature specimen. As this puffball develops, the spines fall off individually, revealing the coppery colored outer skin. Spores are released, often by rain drops, through a pore on top. |
