| This interesting mushroom can be hypogeous (growing underground) or epigeous (growing above ground). DNA studies place this fungus in the genus Lactarius. It exudes a milky latex and has spiny, reticulated spores. Like other gasteroid fungi (puffballs, earthstars and false truffles, for example) it produces its spores within the fruiting body instead of outside. This specimen was found in October. |
